Welcome to the industry resource for contractor training and development. The RI Builders Association in partnership with the RI Lumber Dealers, product manufacturers, building officials, and other industry professionals, have come together to offer the largest and most comprehensive education resource available in RI. From safety and Lead RRP training to construction courses in framing, roofing, siding, scheduling to professional offerings in estimating, marketing and so much more.

All of the courses we offer have been approved for continuing education credit with the contractor’s registration board (CRLB). You’re able to choose what works for you while earning the credits you need for your registration renewals.

How to Renew my Rhode Island General Contractor Registration  

Q: Who needs to renew their registration?

A: Any contractor renewing their General Contractor’s Registration with the Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board (CRLB) must renew their registration on a yearly basis.  

Q: Is there a continuing education requirement?

A: You must complete a state-approved 2.5-hour continuing education course and submit proof with your renewal application. Rhode Island Builders Association (RIBA) is an approved provider (provide code 1) and offers multiple courses approved for continuing education credit both in-person and virtually.   1. Virtual (live via zoom) or in-person classes on a variety of topics that most suit your needs ribuilders.org/rhode-island-contractor-continuing-education

Q: What if my registration has expired for more than one year?

A: If your registration has been expired for over one year, you must complete a 5-hour pre-registration course. The 2.5-hour continuing education course will not be accepted as a substitute.  

Q: What insurance coverage is required?

A: You must provide a Certificate of General Liability Insurance with minimum coverage of $500,000, naming CRLB as the certificate holder. If you have employees, you must also provide a Certificate of Workers’ Compensation Insurance, naming CRLB as the certificate holder. You can obtain liability insurance from Builders Insurance Group (BIG). BIG is a fully owned subsidiary of the Rhode Island Builders Association and was created in 2012 to offer insurance products and services to the construction industry. Q: Do I need to register my business entity?

A: If your business is an LLC, corporation, or other incorporated entity, you must register with the Rhode Island Secretary of State and include your Business Identification Number (BIN) on your renewal application. 

Q: What if any identification is required?

  • A: A copy of a valid, government-issued photo ID must be included with your application.

Q: What if I live outside of Rhode Island

A: Out-of-state applicants must obtain a Rhode Island Agent of Service (registered agent). The agent must be a Rhode Island resident or an entity qualified to do business in the state, have a Rhode Island street address (no P.O. Boxes), and be available during business hours to accept legal documents.  

Q: Where can I obtain an Agent of Service?

A: RI Builders Association is a provider of this service. Please call the office at 401-438-7400 or email info@ribuilders.org for additional information.  

Q: How much does renewal cost?

A: The registration fee is $150. If your registration is expired, an additional $50 late fee applies.

Q: How do I pay my renewal fee?

A: Payments may be made by credit card, debit card, or e-Check using the OpenGov platform. You may also mail a check payable to RICRLB, with your registration or license number on it, to:

Q: Is reciprocity available for contractor registrations?

A: No. Contractors’ registrations are not reciprocal with other states.
