How to become a new contractor in Rhode Island

Q: Who needs to renew their registration

A. All contractors and subcontractors engaged in building or repairing structures are required to register with the Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board (RICRLB). Registration is also mandatory for anyone involved in demolishing or relocating residential or commercial structures. 

Q: Do I need to take a course?

A: Yes. First-time applicants must complete a state-approved, 5-hour pre-registration course.

Q. Where can I take the 5-hour pre-registration course?

A: Rhode Island Builders Association is an approved provider and offers this course both in-person and virtually. Contact the office at 401-438-7400 or info@ribuilders.org 

Q. Is there an test?

A: Currently there is no examination  

Q: Are there any exemptions from the course?

A: Yes. If your work will be exclusively on commercial structures, you are exempt from the course requirement. 

Q: What insurance documents are required?

  • General Liability Insurance: Submit a Certificate of General Liability Insurance with minimum coverage of $500,000, naming RICRLB as the certificate holder.  
  • Workers’ Compensation Insurance: If you have employees, submit a Certificate of Workers’ Compensation Insurance, also naming RICRLB as the certificate holder.  

Q: Where can I obtain general liability insurance?

A: Builders Insurance Group (BIG) is a fully owned subsidiary of the Rhode Island Builders Association and was created in 2012 to offer insurance products and services to the construction industry. Contact BIG at info@builderinsgroup.com or 401-438-4244. 

Q: Do I need to register my business with the state?

A: If your business is organized as an LLC, corporation, or other incorporated entity, you must register with the Rhode Island Secretary of State.  

Q: What form of identification is required?

A: Provide a copy of valid, government-issued identification.

Q: Are there special requirements for out-of-state applicants?

A: Yes. Out-of-state applicants must obtain an Agent of Service registered in Rhode Island.

Q: Does Rhode Island offer reciprocity for contractors’ registration?

A: No, reciprocity is not available.
